Winter Driving: Essential Tips for Staying Safe

Winter driving

As temperatures drop in Sun Valley and the Sierra Nevada region, winter driving presents unique challenges. Snow, ice, and cold weather can take a toll on your vehicle and increase the risk of accidents if you're not prepared. At Mt Autoworks, we want to help you stay safe on the roads this winter.

1. Check Your Battery

Cold weather is hard on car batteries. In fact, a battery that's already struggling can fail completely when temperatures drop below freezing. Before winter hits, have your battery tested at Mt Autoworks. If it's more than 4 years old or showing signs of weakness, consider replacing it. There's nothing worse than being stranded in the cold with a car that won't start.

2. Inspect Your Tires

Your tires are your only contact with the road, so they're critical for winter safety. Check tread depth - if you can see the top of Lincoln's head when you insert a penny, it's time for new tires. Consider switching to winter or all-season tires if you haven't already. Also check tire pressure - cold air causes pressure to drop, so inflate tires to the manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Test Your Brakes

Stopping on icy roads requires properly working brakes. Have your brake pads checked and make sure there's plenty of lining remaining. If you notice any squeaking, grinding, or vibration when braking, schedule an inspection immediately. Don't forget to check your brake fluid - old or contaminated fluid can affect braking performance.

4. Check Coolant and Antifreeze

Your cooling system keeps your engine from overheating, but it also prevents the engine block from cracking in freezing temperatures. Make sure your antifreeze mixture is correct - a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually ideal for winter. We can test your coolant's freeze protection level at our shop.

5. Replace Worn Wiper Blades

Winter weather means snow, slush, and road spray. Your wiper blades need to be in top condition to keep your windshield clear. If they're leaving streaks or skipping, replace them. Also make sure your windshield washer fluid is rated for freezing temperatures - regular washer fluid can freeze in the reservoir.

6. Pack an Emergency Kit

Even with the best preparation, emergencies can happen. Keep these items in your car:

  • Blanket or sleeping bag
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Jumper cables
  • Ice scraper
  • Non-perishable snacks and water
  • First aid kit
  • Phone charger

7. Drive Smart

No matter how well-prepared your vehicle is, your driving habits matter. Slow down - speeds that are safe in dry conditions are dangerous on ice. Increase following distance to give yourself more time to react. Avoid sudden stops and starts. And if conditions are really bad, consider staying home or waiting until roads are cleared.

Get Pre-Winter Inspection

The best way to ensure your vehicle is ready for winter is to schedule a pre-winter inspection at Mt Autoworks. We'll check all the critical systems and let you know if any repairs are needed before cold weather arrives. Don't wait until you're stuck on the side of the road - be proactive and stay safe this winter.
