Summer Car Care: Keep Your Vehicle Running Cool

Summer car maintenance

Summer heat can be brutal on your vehicle. While we all focus on staying cool, our cars are working overtime to avoid overheating. At Mt Autoworks, we've seen plenty of summer breakdowns that could have been prevented with proper maintenance. Here's how to keep your vehicle running smoothly all summer long.

1. Check Your Cooling System

Your engine generates a lot of heat, and summer temperatures don't help. Before the hot months arrive, have your cooling system inspected. We'll check coolant levels, hose condition, the radiator, and the water pump. If your coolant is more than 2 years old, it might be time for a flush and refill. Coolant loses efficiency over time and can become acidic, which damages engine components.

2. Inspect Your Tires

Hot pavement is tough on tires. Check tire pressure monthly - heat causes air to expand, which can lead to overinflation. Also inspect tread depth and look for cracks, bulges, or objects lodged in the rubber. If your tires are worn or more than 6 years old, consider replacing them before a summer road trip. Don't forget to check your spare tire too!

3. Test Your Air Conditioning

There's nothing worse than a broken AC in 100-degree weather. If your air conditioning isn't cooling like it should, it might be low on refrigerant or have a leak. We can diagnose and repair your AC system to keep you comfortable. Also check your cabin air filter - a clogged filter reduces airflow and makes your AC work harder.

4. Check Fluid Levels

Heat accelerates fluid evaporation. Check these regularly:

  • Engine oil - Low oil can cause serious engine damage, especially in heat
  • Coolant - Check overflow reservoir when engine is cold
  • Transmission fluid - Important for smooth shifting
  • Windshield washer fluid - You'll use more in summer with dust and bugs
  • Power steering fluid - Can overheat without proper levels

5. Replace Worn Belts and Hoses

Rubber components degrade faster in extreme temperatures. Inspect belts for cracks, fraying, or glazing. Check hoses for soft spots, cracks, or leaks. A broken belt or burst hose can leave you stranded - definitely not how you want to spend a summer day. We can replace worn parts before they fail.

6. Keep Your Battery in Check

Summer heat is actually harder on batteries than winter cold. Heat accelerates battery fluid evaporation and causes internal corrosion. If your battery is more than 3 years old, have it tested. Clean any corrosion from the terminals and ensure connections are tight. A weak battery might start your car fine in the morning but fail after the engine heats up.

7. Prepare for Road Trips

Planning a summer vacation? Before you hit the road:

  • Check all lights and signals
  • Inspect brakes
  • Pack an emergency kit with water, flashlight, and basic tools
  • Know the route and have a backup plan
  • Schedule a pre-trip inspection at Mt Autoworks

Don't Wait Until You Overheat

The best approach to summer car care is preventive maintenance. Schedule a summer check-up at Mt Autoworks before the temperatures really climb. We'll make sure your vehicle is ready to handle the heat. A little maintenance now can prevent a major repair later - and more importantly, keep you safe on the road.
